Bernard was born c. 1876 in Co. Longford, son of Peter Reilly. There is a civil record for Bernard, son of Peter Reilly and Catherine (née Reilly), born on 15 August 1876 in Drumhaldry, Moyne. The draft registration card of his brother John gives Arva as the local post office, tending to confirm that Moyne was his home address. Bernard enlisted at Fort Slocum, New York on 29 June 1917 and served in France from 24 April 1918.
