Harry was born Harry Alfred Hamilton on the 28 January 1885 in Abbeycartron; his father was a Serjeant in the Royal Irish Constabulary (R.I.C.) at the time. By 1901, his the family were living at Gorteenorna, near Melview to the north of the town. 

 

Prior to the war Harry was working as a fireman in with the Calgary Fire Department. Pte Hamilton enlisted in June 1916*, initially serving with the 13th Canadian Mounted Rifles (C.M.R.) and 82nd Batallion before transferring to the PPCLI, known as Patricia's.  He was deployed to the Western Front in July 1916, intially sailing from Halifax, Nova Scotia on board Olympic to Liverpool before entering the war in France in August. He received a back injury during the war, but otherwise appears to have escaped much physical injury. Harry remained in France, save for a number of fortnight's furloughs to the U.K., until March 1919, when he returned to Canada.
