John Mills, known as Jack, was born in Clonbrin, Abbeyshrule on 30 November 1892. His younger brother, Gunner Robert Mills, also served in the Great War, but was killed in action in in 1917. Jack married Annie Fry on the 1 July 1915 in St. Thomas's Church, Dublin. Annie was also from Clonbrin and two of her brothers, Thomas (K.I.A. at Gallipoli) and Alexander , also served in WW1.

Prior to the war, Pte Mills had served with the 5th Leinsters; he renlisted for war service in Mullingar on 9 February 1915 and served overseas in France in 1915 and 1916, and again in 1919. John was discharged from the Army in December 1920 on medical grounds.

John survived the war, and passed away in Worthing, Sussex on 1 August 1977.
