James was born in Longford in 9 August 1881 in Bog Lane, Longford.

Pte Croghan enlisted shortly after the war broke out in 1914, which entitled him to the 1914 (Mons) Star, along with the Silver War Badge, Victory Medal and British War Medal. He was discharged 1915 on health grounds.

 James's brother, William, also served in the Great War.

James Croghan passed away on the 31 December 1942.
