Edward, (Neddy/Ed) was born c.1886 in Granard, and at the time of the 1911 census was working as a postman. Pte Smith enlisted at the beginning of the war and served at the Western Front.

Edward's younger brother, Lawrence (Larry) also served in the Irish Guards in France and another brother James, was with the Royal Field Artillery, but was sadly died in March 1916

Parents Names: Son of Michael and Rose Anne Smith, The Hill, Granard.
