Patrick was born in Edgeworthstown c.1870. He later moved to Scotland, marrying Catherine Robbins in Dundee*. They had three daughters Margaret McKenzie, Catherine and Elizabeth born between 1902 and 1907.

Patrick served in the Royal Field Artillery in Scotland prior to the war. He re-enlisted on 21 August 1915 and went on active service in France on 2 September 1915. He was later transferred to the Labour Corps and remained on active service until 29 June 1918; he was discharged on medical grounds on 11 September 1918**.
