Little is known about James Norris's early life. It seems he was born in Longford town, but lived in or near Ballymahon prior to enlisting to serve in the Great War.

Pte Norris enlisted for war service in Oranmore, Co. Galway in October 1914. The early enlistment date suggests he may have been a Reservist.
