William was born 22 September 1889 in Soran.

He enlisted in Longford and had fought in the Battle of the Somme, but was sadly killed in action at the Battle of Cambrai in November 1917, likely in the action at Gouzeaucourt which was documented by Rudyard Kipling in his history of the Irish Guards and his poem of 1918, The Irish Guards
