Information: | It is believed that John was born c.1885 in the parish of Killashee. According to a short memorial published in the Widnes Weekly News in 1940, he had two brothers who died in the 2nd Boer War. He moved to Lancashire and married Mary Carroll in or near Prescot, Lancashire in early 1915; her father, James, was believed to be from Newtownforbes. John and Mary had one child, Annie Mary Lane, born in August 1915. John enlisted in Warrington, Lancashire in January 1915, and entered into the war on the Western front in May 1915. The Dumfries & Galloway Herald and other newspapers listed John as being wounded in action in August 1915; sadly he was listed as having been killed in action one month later, shortly after the birth of his daughter, Annie. |
