The Rev. Robert Basil Gwydir, O.S.B. (Benedictine) was born on 20 January 1867 in Longford. His father was Dr Robert C. Gwydir and the family lived in Cartron Abbey, Basttery Road.

He was the first chaplain of any faith to die in the Great War.
