Information:

Patrick was born on or around the 20 Aug 1871 in Granard, Co. Longford*; his father Patrick had sadly died only 39 days before Patrick Jr's birth. 

Philip emigrated to New York. c.1886. Patrick appears to have initially enlisted with the US Army in Jan 1893**, and served in the Spanish-American War (Apr-Jul 1898) in the Philippines, and was awarded a number of medals for his service. He was honourably discharged in 1904, likely on health grounds. After his Army service, Patrick resided with his sister, Mrs. Mary Burns in Washington D.C. and joined the Police Department by July 1908. 

Patrick died of tuberculosis, determined to be Acute Military TB at his sister's residence in November 1918.

Notes: Our thanks to Patricia Shepherd for submitting the entry and additional information. *Patrick's obituary give 26 Aug 1871 as his date of birth; it is quite common for Irish people of this era to not have exact dates of birth, and can be out by a number of years in many cases. **Army records show Philip as being a striking young man, being quite tall for the time at 5' 11"3/4 with red/auburn hair and fair skin. ***Please note that both Fold3.com and Ancestry.com are paid subscription sites.
