Information: | Thomas was born in Forthill on, or around, 28 Feb 1919. During World War 2 Thomas served with the 2/6th (Bermondsey) Battalion of the West Surrey Regiment, a London-based Territorial Army unit. It formed part of the 35th Brigade, an infantry brigade that served in a number of theatres in WW2, including the Battle of France and retreat to Dunkirk in May/June 1940. Between 1940 and early 1943 the brigade served in Britain, India and the Middle East in particular in Iraq.
In March 1943 the Brigade was sent to Egypt and westwards across North Africa to Tunisia to join the X Corps of the British Eighth Army. They arrived in Enfidaville on the 23 Apr 1943, facing primarily Italian troops. A week later Thomas was killed in action. Sadly, Thomas's mother, Margaret, also died shortly thereafter on the 23 May 1943. |
