Information: | Thomas was born c.1894, but emigrated to the USA as child, later becoming a naturalised citizen. Many members of the family returned to Ireland c.1909; Thomas returned to Drumlish in c.1917 when his father died. Little is known about Thomas's WW1 service, but it is believed that he received gun shot wounds to his arm and leg, which left him disabled. In April 1921 Thomas was murdered as an action of the War of Independence. In a comment to the Boston Globe, his sister claimed the RIC constable he was speaking with was a former comrade with whom he served in France in the Great War. |
Parents Names: | Likely William Byrne (Beirne) and Ellen, Drumlish |
Notes: | In the Skibbereen Eagle of the 16 April 1921, a series of War of Independence related attacks were outlined, including the murder of Thomas Byrne, son of Mrs Mary Byrne, of Drumlish, who was described as being a former British Army soldier. |
