Thomas was a long-time solider serving with the Connaught Rangers, having attained the rank of Sergeant by 1911. Thomas served in World War 1, but was discharged from service in September 1916 and returned to Boyle. He died a few months later due to cerebral malaria and apoplexy.

Notes: | IrelandsGreatWarDead.ie noted that Thomas was submitted to the In From The Cold Project, however they rejected this application as it was not clear that his death was due to, or exacerbated by, his service. Some of the surviving pensions indexes suggest that his awards file had been partially or wholly destroyed by March 1966. |
